Entrepreneurship after Military Service

David J Dunworth

Your service to this great country is commendable, and now that you have returned, you need to go on with your life.  Depending on your individual situation, the job you left may or may not be there upon your return, and if it is, how long will it last?  Every company on the face of the earth is attempting to “do more with less” and that means down sizing, layoff, right sizing or whatever other term you employ to describe the elimination of your position.  Don’t get me wrong, they aren’t targeting Vets, they are targeting the positions.  It’s fact, not fiction.

The time for entrepreneurship is at hand.

There are thousands of opportunities for Veterans to seek entrepreneurial opportunities, and the government has programs to assist those returning home, and unable to return to the rigorous hard work that many performed before shipping out.  Regardless of the economic facts, there is a strong need for the individual entrepreneur to succeed.  Entrepreneurs built this great nation; Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and the other signers of the Constitution were all entrepreneurs. They wanted to control their time at work, their time for worship, their time for family, but in order to achieve their desires; they had to form an entire country to do so. We are in the same type of revolution now that they were two hundred plus years ago.

If you have the desire to perform non-traditional employment, you may need some specialized training, but there are opportunities for those seeking their own path.

There are organizations that are specifically designed to assist the Vet earn business within the government, and they are known as Service Disabled Veteran Owned Businesses, which can be found on the internet.  Did you know that there are more than 46,000 Veteran Owned businesses listed on VeteranOwnedBusiness.com, VETBIZ.com and a host of other sites.   You have a chance to be in business for yourself without being by yourself.  Check it out!
